Joseph James Horvat, Ph.D. The following from the official Obit. Classmate comments appear below
RICHARDSON, TEXAS – Joseph James Horvat, Ph.D., set sail
peacefully, but unexpectedly, Wednesday morning, the 23rd of
Jan. 2008, at his home.
“Dr. H,” as he was called by many, was born Dec. 3, 1942 in
Youngstown. He was the son of the late Joseph J. and Sylvia
Horvat, the latter still a resident of Girard.
He went to high school in Girard where he played football. It
was during this time that he met, Joanne Williamson (Brine). The
two married in 1964 and later parted in 1970. His undergraduate
education was completed at Youngstown State University. He went
on to attend Case-Western Reserve University earning his
doctorate of psychology in 1969. He later became a professor at
Millersville University where he met Ann Marie Horvat (Reedy).
The couple married July 5, 1981. The couple moved to
Natchitoches, La. in 1981 before moving to Texas.
As a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas for many years, Dr. H
owned his own private psychology practice from 1982 to 2006.
There, he became interested in the International Society for
Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR) and focused his practice on
neurofeedback. He was a member of ISNR for many years, serving
as treasurer from 1997 until he became president in 2005. In
2006, he accepted a position at a clinic in Tucson, Ariz. where
he and Ann Marie enjoyed learning about an entirely new
landscape.
Dr. Horvat had just undertaken a new position at the
NeuroTherapy Center of Dallas in the fall of 2007. He is listed
in the Who’s Who of Psychology and authored many articles
such as his chapter in the Handbook of Neurofeedback, Coherence
and the Quirks of Coherence/Phase Training: A Clinical
Perspective.
When Joe’s interest turned towards a hobby, he loved to immerse
himself in them. He was a long time lover of sailing but also
enjoyed phases playing tennis, golfing, and cruising on his
motorcycle. He was very proud of his position as a former
Commodore and founding member of the Padre Island Yacht Club and
enjoyed making boats for trial sails.
Throughout his travels and living in many towns, he has a number
of friends who fondly tell tales of his humor and exploits. He
was irreverent yet eloquent but always remembered as a “fun”
hearty liver of life.
Dr. H is survived by his wife and first mate, Ann Marie Horvat,
who will be returning to Corpus Christi with their Wheaton
Terrier, Chloe and cat, Lisa.
Son, Joel Horvat, the son of Joe and Joanne Williamson is in Columbus working as a pharmacist. Erin Ressler, his daughter with Ann Marie, attends pharmacy school in Houston, Texas. His mother, Sylvia Horvat lives in Girard.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph John Horvat, who
passed away in 1998 in Girard.
He was honored in memorial at Restland Funeral Home’s Abbey
Chapel in Richardson, Texas Jan. 26, 2008.
A memorial service followed at the Padre Island Yacht Club.
As his friends read this, each will have his most favorite
Joe story that rings in their mind. As it does, please raise a
glass for Dr. H
Please, those GHS classmate who knew Joe, please pay a tribute to him here on this website. Send to eddechant@earthlink.net.
What a long and interesting journey Joe had. A long way
from our discussing joining a gang in Youngstown in ninth
grade. Sounds like he had a lot of fun along the way, and
made many friends. Good for Joe! ----

A few years back, while I was still practicing law Joe
Horvat was in town and wanted Elaine and I to join him and
Ann for diner. I suggested Jerry and Martha join us. The six
of us went to the Olive Garden on 422. When I headed for
home my sides hurt. I don’t believe I laughed so much for so
long in my entire life. I just sat there as Joe and Jerry
entertained us(with everyone in the Olive Garden listening)
story after story, one liner after one liner, one upping the
other, over and over ,the entire night. These were two good
men, Joe and Jerry both of whom beginning in the early years
have had a special place in my heart and my life.
